CBT Moped Training
Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is a course you normally take before you ride a moped or scooter. The aim of the CBT moped training course is to make sure you have the skills, knowledge and understanding to go out on the road, on your own. It is also designed to help you prepare for a full motorcycle test if you choose to take one.
MCIA RIDE accredited training schools employ experienced and highly trained instructors who will provide you with valuable practical advice during your course, so take the opportunity to learn as much as you can.
There isn’t a test or exam in CBT moped training courses and no set timescale to complete. You should only move from one training element to another when you and your instructor are happy that you have learnt the theory and completed the practical skills to a safe level.
Don’t be worried if your course takes longer than a day, your instructor will only sign you off when they are satisfied you are safe to ride unaccompanied on the road.
What is included in a CBT?
There are five elements included in your CBT which are delivered in a classroom environment, on a training area, and on the public highway.
• practical on-site training
• practical on-site riding
• practical on-road training
• practice on-road riding*
Your MCIA RIDE training school will ensure that you receive the correct amount of on-road training *on-road riding lasts for a minimum of 2 hours (this is a legal requirement).
Do I need a CBT for a moped?
You will need to undertake a CBT moped training course before you can ride a moped or scooter on the road unless you meet one of the following criteria:
• Want to ride a moped (up to 50cc) and you passed your car driving test before 1 February 2001
• Have a full motorcycle licence already
How much is moped training?
The cost of CBT moped training varies but it is usually between £100 and £160 for the course. This cost can vary if you require additional training so always ask the MCIA RIDE training school you are training with what they suggest. You will be accompanied by other learners on your course which will add to the enjoyment of the day as you learn with, and from, each other.
Don’t base your CBT moped training requirements on cost alone as there are some cheap courses available, but these might not meet your needs in full. MCIA Ride training schools offer high quality training with high quality equipment. Make your buying decision an investment in your safety.
Moped training for beginners
If you are unsure if riding a moped is for you then we would recommend our TryRIDE experience. TryRIDE is part of MCIA RIDE and is a popular, fun and safe motorcycle taster-experience that helps you to understand just how easy it is to learn to ride a moped.
TryRIDE is a fun, hands-on and fully interactive experience. Your instructor will start with an explanation of how the main controls of the moped work, followed by a simple overview of how to sit on the moped, stow the stand and start/stop the engine. Once your instructor is confident in your ability to pull-away and stop, you will progress on to riding independently at slow speed. These basic first steps will allow you to experience how easy, fun and enjoyable it is to ride a moped and will give you an insight into the requirements of your CBT moped training.
If you have completed your CBT moped training and want to carry on your learning experience without taking a full motorcycle test, then CBT Plus is for you. This interactive session can be tailored to your specific needs by an MCIA RIDE training school. The course will focus on areas of your riding you would like to improve, such as riding safely and filtering in busy traffic if you use your moped to commute to work.
