IAM RoadSmart was formed in April 2016 when IAM RoadSmart became the official trading name of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). The organisation is entirely focused on road safety and campaigns on behalf of their members.
IAM RoadSmart advanced riding courses are a popular route to formal advanced motorcycle training in the UK and are available through an extensive network of well organised volunteer groups.
IAM RoadSmart Advanced Rider Course
The IAM RoadSmart Advanced Rider Course is the most popular, it offers a structured three to six month route to gaining an IAM advanced riding qualification. The Advanced Rider Course carries a one-off fee, and sometimes a contribution towards the expenses incurred by your IAM RoadSmart observer.
To reach test standard and full IAM membership takes a significant ongoing time commitment and it is difficult to predict how many sessions will be required. With or without examination, there is no doubt that riders who consistently participate in observed rides with IAM RoadSmart will become more confident riders, with improved skills and greater rider safety.
IPSGA, competencies and log books
Upon booking the Advanced Rider Course, ‘associates’ receive their ‘logbook’. This comprehensive document introduces IPSGA (Information, Position, Speed, Gear and Acceleration) and discusses the seven main competencies as identified by IAM RoadSmart.
These are: human factors, core riding skills, bends/cornering, roundabouts/junctions, overtaking, motorways/dual carriageways and slow riding. Training is progressive, with all competencies recorded on an ongoing basis and development plans maintained.
The Advanced Rider Course is Quality Assured by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
Free assessment rides
A good way to get started with IAM RoadSmart is to book an assessment ride and while these are usually priced at £45, many local IAM RoadSmart Groups offer a free one-hour session. This offers a relaxed and enjoyable way of learning more about IAM RoadSmart, whilst also receiving valuable guidance from an IAM RoadSmart qualified observer. Completing an initial assessment ride also provides a 10% discount on the Advanced Rider Course.
