BikeSafe workshops are offered throughout the UK

While not strictly a motorcycle training course, BikeSafe is acknowledged for its significant contribution to improved levels of rider safety and for gaining buy-in from thousands of motorcyclists who commit to formal post-test motorcycle training with IAM RoadSmart, RoSPA and/or the DVSA Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS).

BikeSafe workshops are offered by 34 police forces at 75 venues around the UK.

BikeSafe is available as a standard one-day workshop or as an extended two-day ‘Bridging the Gap’ (BTG) event. One-day BikeSafe workshops include theory, and a police-led observed ride with feedback.

The BTG workshops introduce participants to RoSPA, IAM RoadSmart and ERS. While serving as an excellent route to rider engagement, BikeSafe also empowers positive rider behaviours and attitudes, and allows all riders to embrace the value of post-test rider training.
 

Safety focused and hazard-aware

Advanced police-graded riders are amongst the most skilled, safety-focused and hazard-aware riders in the world. One of the key attractions of BikeSafe is the unique opportunity to ride alongside and be assessed by, a full-time advance-graded police motorcyclist.

BikeSafe introduces riders to the ‘system of motorcycle control’ – as recommended by The Police Foundation and covered in detail in “Motorcycle Roadcraft: The Police Rider’s Handbook”. This system offers riders a safer approach to both recognising and dealing with hazards. It leads to significantly higher standards of riding, higher levels of machine control and improved communication with other road users.

BikeSafe participants will also learn about collision causation, cornering, positioning, overtaking, braking, use of gears and the role of rider attitude within rider safety. 
 

BikeSafe observed rides

An observed ride follows the morning theory session. Participants will ride alongside their nominated BikeSafe Observer and will usually cover 50-100 miles on a variety of rural, town and city roads. With regular breaks, feedback is ongoing, and participants will be made aware of their strengths as well as areas that need attention.

Honest feedback is key and BikeSafe concludes with completion of a ‘rider feedback form’ with recommended actions. Next steps always include signposting to formal post-test training with the DVSA Enhanced Rider Scheme, RoSPA and/or IAM RoadSmart
