September 2026 L-Category (Scooters, Motorcycles & other light vehicles) New Vehicle Registrations

MCIA has today published the new vehicle registration numbers for the L-Category vehicle sector for the month of September.

This includes Mopeds, Scooters, Motorcycles and other categories within the wider L-Category vehicle types.

The total market in September 2026 increased by 6.8% compared with the same month last year, meaning that the market grew by 14.4% across the first nine months of the year.

The September market witnessed growth in both Motorcycle and Scooter registrations, which increased by 6.4% and 4.3% respectively.

Registrations across the key styles show continued growth in the main segments, including a 27.1% rise in the Competition segment during the month and a 22.5% rise year to date. Naked styles also continued to grow, as they have throughout the year, rising by 14.3% in September and 15.2% across the first nine months of the year.

Tony Campbell, CEO of MCIA, said: “September is a key month for the full year market being the second largest of the year, so it is very pleasing to see the market continue to recover from 2025.

“We know the Government is focused on transport policy through connecting people with opportunity, but it needs to remember that buses, trains and active travel cannot do this alone. As we continue to witness an explosion in the use of illegal e-bikes and e-step scooters, this clearly demonstrates there is a need to ease access to legitimate and safe mobility solutions like Mopeds and Motorcycles.

“Bridging the last mile gap, connecting rural communities and providing the public affordable personal transport should be the key focus for government, not ideology…. but reality. Mopeds, motorcycles and other L-Category vehicles should be a key element in a well thought out integrated travel system where government needs to work harder to fully understand what the solutions are.

“As this Government moves forward with devolution and reindustrialisation, it needs to recognise that this sector is about much more than getting from A to B. It also supports manufacturing, innovation, skilled jobs and social mobility and that’s why we’re committed to working with ministers on smarter, integrated travel policies and urge the government to respond positively as it considers the review of rider licensing and training”.
