April 2026 L-Category (Scooters, Motorcycles & other light vehicles) New Vehicle Registrations
MCIA has today published the new vehicle registrations for the month of April.
This includes Mopeds, Scooters, Motorcycles and other categories within the wider L-Category vehicle types.
The total market in April closed with sustained growth of 18.2% compared to 2025, bringing year to date position of a positive 16.1%. The main segments performed strongly, with Motorcycles growing by 18.7% and all Scooters seeing an increase of 40%.
With 2026 now well underway and as the market enters the peak selling months, the Adventure Bike segment continues to lead the way with an increase of 13.7% in the month and 23.4% year to date, closely followed by Naked style bikes increasing by 14.1%.
Tony Campbell, CEO of MCIA, said: “With the new financial year well underway, April’s figures present an optimistic picture. The clear growth in registrations seen this month is not only welcomed but is further evidence of the important role our sector is playing in practical, affordable mobility as well as leisure and lifestyle choice.
“However, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to be a source of challenge for our industry and the sector hopes to see a continued ceasefire leading to a reduction in fuel prices that will undoubtedly help to support market stability as well as renewing consumer confidence.
“Now, as we move into the spring and summer months, it will be critical that this momentum is supported by a policy environment that recognises the contribution the L-category sector makes to the wider transport ecosystem and the UK economy. The ending of the Motorcycle Plug in Grant in March was another blow for the sector, yet we are confident that the upcoming Licence Review, announced in the Government’s Road Safety Strategy, will be a key moment for the sector and builds on our long-standing calls for reform. My team will be doing all they can to ensure the licence review delivers outcomes that encourage market growth rather than discourage new users from entering and remaining in the market.”

Notes for Editors
MCIA is the body that represents the UK L-Category vehicle industry. L-Category vehicles can be defined as motorised lightweight scooters, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles, typically with zero or low-emission power.
Within regulation they are defined as ‘L-Category’ vehicles (Regulation 168/2013) and are a great solution to the congestion and air quality challenges we all face. They are also sometimes referred to as powered light vehicles (PLV).
