October 2024 L-Category (Scooters, Motorcycles & other light vehicles) New Vehicle Registrations
MCIA have today published the new vehicle market data for the month of October 2024. This includes mopeds, scooters, motorcycles and other L-Category vehicle segments.
New registrations for October closed at minus 2.5%, compared to October 2023. Whilst this represents an improvement on September’s disappointing results, October witnessed a number of market distortions caused by the movement from Euro 5 to Euro 5+ regulations that come into full effect from January 1st 2025.
Year to date, the total market continues to perform reasonably well (minus 3.7%) given the challenging economic environment. Although the main selling season is drawing to a close, our sector continues to drive ahead with high investment, new innovations and many new products, all of which were introduced at this week’s European exhibition in Milan, Italy (EICMA). The number of new products and brands entering the market is a healthy indication that the L-Category vehicle sector is attracting high interest as it will play a key role as transport and mobility evolves in the coming years.
Looking ahead to Motorcycle Live which opens on Saturday 16th running through to Sunday 24th November, at the NEC, Birmingham, we are expecting a bumper crowd of over 100,000 visitors, where they will see and be able to touch for the first time all the new products here in the UK. The event has undergone a major revamp for 2024 where it will not just deliver the normal feast of new products, but it will also thrill visitors with a festival feel, live music, live stunt action and many new interactive features.
Tony Campbell, CEO of MCIA, said: “We will no doubt face a continuation of a challenging market over the next few months. The new government’s budget was certainly nothing to get excited about I am particularly concerned about the impact this may have on the SME’s that make up a large part of our sector.
Whilst the market isn’t looking great at this time, I believe we should be very optimistic about the next few years. The level of interest in the sector is growing where transport and mobility is evolving fast, and our sector is well placed to take full advantage.
MCIA is calling on this new Government to look closely at what our Industry has to offer and not to “knee jerk” into new regulation that may have unintended negative consequences”.

Notes for Editors:
MCIA is the body that represents the UK L-Category vehicle industry. L-Category vehicles can be defined as motorised lightweight scooters, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles, typically with zero or low-emission power.
Within regulation they are defined as ‘L-Category’ vehicles (Regulation 168/2013) and are a great solution to the congestion and air quality challenges we all face. They are also sometimes referred to as powered light vehicles (PLV).
