September 2024 L-Category (Scooters, Motorcycles & other light vehicles) New Vehicle Registrations

MCIA have today published the new vehicle market data for the month of September 2024. This includes Mopeds, Scooters, Motorcycles and other L-Category segments.

New registrations for September closed at a disappointing 11,570 units, compared to September 2023 of 13,471, meaning we saw a year-on-year decline of 1,900 units, some 14.1% down.
The impact of September volumes has seen a knock on effect to the year to date market where we are now seeing a decline of -3.8% compared to 2023.

Whilst the headline figures are concerning, some segments continue to perform well both in the month, and year to date. Adventure, Road Sport and Modern Classic continue to buck the trend, all continuing to show positive growth year on year.

The electric powered two wheelers market continues to be under pressure with a decline in the month of -10%, and an overall market decline of -2.6% year to date.

With September being a key volume month for the sector, this market decline highlights the pressure on the industry, where it is becoming evident that consumer confidence is starting to wane amid fears of the continued cost of living pressure, along with threats of an Autumn budget which will add more pressure on households.

Tony Campbell, CEO of MCIA, said "Like many industries, the Motorcycle & Scooter sector hoped the new Government would bring stability through market-friendly policies that boost investor and consumer confidence. While it’s early days, the Government must double down on prioritising economic growth and driving consumer spending.

Regarding net-zero objectives, we urge the Transport Minister to focus on L-Category vehicles, which are key to achieving these objectives. The Government has yet to announce policies that incentivise the shift to low and zero-emission L-Category vehicles. It's crucial it creates industrial opportunities and introduces demand-side policies to drive uptake. Proper implementation of our Action Plan is essential to support supply, demand, and a more sustainable future."

Notes for Editors:

MCIA is the body that represents the UK L-Category vehicle industry. L-Category vehicles can be defined as motorised lightweight scooters, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles, typically with zero or low-emission power.

Within regulation they are defined as ‘L-Category’ vehicles (Regulation 168/2013) and are a great solution to the congestion and air quality challenges we all face. They are also sometimes referred to as powered light vehicles (PLV).
