JULY 2025 L-CATEGORY (SCOOTERS, MOTORCYCLES & OTHER LIGHT VEHICLES) NEW VEHICLE REGISTRATIONS

MCIA has today published the new vehicle market data for the month of July 2025.
This includes Mopeds, Scooters, Motorcycles and some other specific sectors of the wider L-Category vehicle types.
New registrations for the month of July show a welcome improvement at minus 2.4%, compared to minus 18.6% in June which represents a positive swing of over 16%. This trend is also reflected in an improved year to date market recovering to a minus 17.8% compared to the previous year.
The Scooter segments performance ahead of the 2024 market by 4.3% in the month where the Motorcycle segments remained negative albeit still vastly improved from the first 6 months. Standout style segments in the month were Adventure closing at 0.6% ahead of last year and Road Sport an impressive 15.5% on the same month in 2024.
Tony Campbell, CEO of MCIA, said: “ It has undoubtedly been a challenging year for our sector, with new bike registrations up to June falling short of 2024 levels. That said, many of our members continue to see solid performance in other areas, such as used bikes, components, accessories, and aftermarket services. July delivered a welcome uptick, and we hope this signals a stronger second half of the year for new motorcycle sales.
The Prime Minister’s recent visit to Norton Motorcycles was a high-profile recognition of UK motorcycle manufacturing, and we hope it marks the beginning of a more engaged relationship between government and our sector. The UK’s motorcycle and L-Category industry has a critical role to play in supporting jobs, exports, innovation, and the shift to more sustainable transport options.
We also welcome recent enforcement action against illegal, unregulated electric vehicles that have damaged the integrity of our sector. While it is regrettable that it took high-profile media coverage to prompt a response, we hope this marks a turning point and that the authorities will now allocate the resources necessary to deal with this issue effectively.
As we look ahead to the remainder of 2025, we welcome signs of a possible interest rate reduction. We urge the Government to consider carefully the pressures facing businesses and consumers as it shapes its Autumn Budget — and to work with industry to create the conditions for long-term growth”

Notes for Editors:
MCIA is the body that represents the UK L-Category vehicle industry. L-Category vehicles can be defined as motorised lightweight scooters, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles, typically with zero or low-emission power.
Within regulation they are defined as ‘L-Category’ vehicles (Regulation 168/2013) and are a great solution to the congestion and air quality challenges we all face. They are also sometimes referred to as powered light vehicles (PLV).
